Finnish Aviation Museum and Finnish Heritage Agency sign agreement on collection storage

The collections of the Finnish Aviation Museum will be transferred to new, purpose-built storage facilities at the Finnish Heritage Agency’s Collection and Conservation Centre in Hakkila, Vantaa. The agreement ensures the long-term preservation of valuable aviation heritage materials, including documents, photographs, artefacts and aircraft, in stable and controlled conditions.

Preparing the collections for long-term storage is a careful, multi-stage process. The collections are being inventoried, documented, cleaned and photographed, while items selected for the future permanent exhibition of the New Aviation Museum are identified. Suitable storage solutions are planned individually for different types of materials, with special arrangements prepared for larger objects and aircraft.

The Finnish Heritage Agency’s facilities provide an appropriate environment for preserving the collections. Upon arrival, items are processed systematically and treated according to their materials to prevent damage from pests and other risks before being placed in long-term storage.

The first aircraft from the museum’s collections to be transferred to the Finnish Heritage Agency’s facilities was the glider PIK-3C Kajava, OH-201, which was moved in May 2026.

The transfer of collections began in May 2026 and will continue in stages over several years. The majority of the collections will be moved during 2028–2029 as part of the New Aviation Museum project, which will bring a new museum with permanent exhibitions to Aviapolis, Vantaa. The new museum is planned to open by early 2028.
