In the print by aviation artist Kari Vertanen, the Focke Wulfs of the Kuhlmey Air Division fly above Portinhoikka.
The German Air Division Kuhlmey’s contribution to the interception battles of the summer of -44 was significant. In Kari Vertanen’s painting, Hptm. (Captain) Erwin-Peter Diekwisch’s Focke-Wulf FW 190 F-8 “Jabo” flies in the Portinhoikka-Ihantala area above Kyöpelinvuori.
The fighters of the Air Division joined the battles immediately the same day after arriving at Immola airfield on June 16. The last aircraft of the division left Finland on August 13, having made over 1200 combat flights in less than two months. Flights were also carried out from Uti airfield in August.
