Limited edition of Finnair Caravelle scale model now available!
Herpa’s stylish, ready metal model of the Sud Aviation Caravelle in Finnair’s colors. The scale of the model is 1:500 and the wingspan is approximately 7 cm. The model’s aircraft is OH-LEA, nicknamed “Sinilintu” (meaning Blue Bird).
The Caravelle made its first flight in 1955 and Finnair received its first Caravelles in 1960. OH-LEA was one of Finnair’s first Caravelles, starting the era of jet aircraft in Finnish passenger traffic. The placement of the engines at the rear was a new solution at the time, which was later often copied.
The new jet aircraft replaced its predecessor, the Convair 440 Metropolitan piston-engine aircraft, in domestic scheduled traffic. Faster, more spacious and quieter, Caravelle improved the connections to the world and travel comfort of both Finnish companies and citizens. The speed also meant that charter flights to holiday destinations could be operated at night without disrupting scheduled flights during the day. The Caravelles were used for short and medium-distance flights.
The Caravelle OH-LEA model is a great gift idea for a model collector or a nostalgic memento of trips from decades ago.
